Wow. I wonder what the terms were? Upgrade facilities possibly?
Looks like Nowra and Bulli will need to take up the slack

When one of your "Traditional" clubs can't come to terms with number one, that's telling me big changes are a coming.

This decision for whatever reason was inevitable after what this industry has been through lately, Dapto just happen to be in the firing line.

Due to the popularity of this track which stretches back close to 100 years, his is a shot over every clubs bow.

The picture has now become much clearer to all stake-holders.

What is the Dapto Greyhound Clubs financial situation currently, surely must be quite healthy after all these years?

Sandro,
This outcome has been a certain Dapto supremo and perhaps the NSW Branch of the A&H Society strategy for many years. Dismantling of the Dapto Greyhound Supporters Club was a major step. Dubious appointments to positions of management was another. Changes in the A&H Board to restrict membership. Restrictions on trial dates each week. Limited hours for staff due to wage issues. And so it goes on
The press release says it all, the land holding is far too valuable to be used just for greyhounds
A sad day for the Dapto community and the Greyhound Industry at large.

As of this minute (1400 Wed) there is no announcement from GRNSW nor is it clear if it is the Show Society or the racing operation that is at fault.

It is also ironic that the club has been top of the pops in past years' rankings for keeping neat books; that it fairly recently got upwards of $0.5m to renew the track, and get the Minister to "open" it; that it earlier got a similar amount to rebuild the bar etc; and that earlier again it got even more to build a "grandstand" (so-called) and other bits and pieces.

At one stage it was also a candidate to move out of its Thursday slot (I think to Monday) but managed to force a change of mind at GRA. The President was on the GRA board at the time.

Failing a GRNSW statement, we have to assume it is all due to a Welfare problem - ie a crook track. I can understand that as the original grass track, the initial loam track and the re-built loam track that replaced it have always had problems. The worst of those by far is the silly positioning of the 520m boxes (crowded over to the line of the running rail) which causes the inside dogs to tend to veer to the right at the jump. But the first turn has never been any help anyway.

Likewise, the motley collection of buildings has never made much sense.

I have previously suggested the whole deal should be dynamited and moved to the north (diverting the kennel access road elsewhere) and a fresh design used to build a decent track. In a way, that approximates what was done on closing down Beaumont Park and moving to a different Newcastle site and new club(s) - although the new/current layout there was done by an engineering firm which had no greyhound racing experience - it showed.

In spite of all that, strategically there is plenty of justification for a circle track in the area - at least when the dog population returns to more normal levels. Plus, it can pull in local public support and the freeway access is good from Sydney (much better than when I had to catch the 5pm train from Central and then get on a chartered bus back to Sutherland station after the last).

We await with bated breath.

So what happens tomorrow?

Press release seems to suggest they won't be racing. However, I just looked at the dogs website and fields are still up.

Does anyone know?

You know what happens when you start assuming Brucey Boy. Nothing wrong with the track or the crowd hanging over the fence if you can obtain some pictures of cootamundra back in the 70s that would dispel that myth of the crowd being to close. As previously stated its all about the land and the $$$$$$$$$$ simple as that.

Bruce,
drawing on my knowledge of what happened with the supposed extension and modifications to the Dapto greyhound racing track, it was supposed to lead from the approximate position of the 520 boxes out into the carpark in front of the kennel block with a big sweeping bend coming into the back straight utilising the access road from Maccas thus creating a much safer and bigger track. This was kiboshed by the el Presidente at the time, and the monies spent to end up with the current design.
The most recent attempted change was a lobby group including the A&H pushing for a 400m corner start. This was rejected on safety and logical grounds by the Greyhound members of the Supporters Club Board. The boxes still went in, but were only to be used for trialling. Actually the first set of boxes were a total disaster and were returned, ending up with the configuration of we have today.
Somehow the Supporters Club copped the bill for that little folly, I know that as I was Treasurer at the time.

Well Im confused.

The Dapto Show Society press release said that their registration expired on 31st October.

The GRNSW press release said they were still in standard negotiations, mentioned no registration dates but also didnt directly contradict the statement about the registration expiring on the 31st of October.

So did Dapto's registration expire on the 31st of October or not?

I thought GRNSW were responsible for the registration. If they had registered them past the 31st of October then why didnt their press release say that? If they hadnt registered them then surely they should clarify that.

I am guessing we will hear more but for the moment I have to say Im so confused as to what has happened.

The clubs contract finished on the 31st of Oct, but according to Tony Mestro it has been extended while negotiations are...or were under way.

From what I'm hearing the club will not close but there's along way to go before anything gets a rubber-stamp.

There's obviously alot going on behind the scenes. Scuff that in time, will float to the surface.

And yes, tomorrow nights meet is still on...according to Tony once again.

Listening to Tony there seems to me more questions than answers.

He appeared to say that they were negotiating to extend the registration and that it was extended today. So it seems that when the Dapto Board made the decision they werent registered.

How can GRNSW have been blindsided when its November 6 today and the Dapto club has not been registered since October 31? Did not alarm bells ring?

Why was their registration not extended? Was it because they didnt sign the deal or was it the financial matters Tony mentions?
