Rex make sure the nail is cut right back keep exercise to a minimum and use a thin strips of tape to bind the toes together also when you start to gallop him. Make sure it is not to tight other wise you stop the blood flow and the foot will swell. I have had this happen to 2 dogs on one it went again and had to be operated on, the other one so far so good over 9 months now. I also found Zheng Gu Shui was very good by applying to the joint 3 or 4 times a day. You have to be patient it should heal in time but if it goes again it will have to be operated on pin fired or cemented.

Rex, if you have a horse supply outlet near you, ask if they have the elastic bands that are used to braid horse mains. When you start running the dog again, these fit perfectly around the toes and have some give in them.
Cheers
Rich

Rex I have a bitch who badly dislocated the second toe on her NS rear in a race a couple of weeks ago.
The oncourse vet bandaged the toe that evening and it was needled up the following morning.
I had her to my vet again 7 days later so he could check on its progress and rebandage it to provide support.
It appears to be mending well and will be checked again in another 7 days when we expect it may need to be needled again, to be sure, to be sure.
Its unlikely that she will be free galloped for at least 4 possibly 6 weeks from the date of the incident.
The two middle toes will need to be held together with a band for at least the first few runs.

Not uncommon and should heal without problems. I agree with all the above advice especially getting the toenail cut right back it takes the pressure off and I have found it saves the dog hobbling around probably take six weeks before you can trial again. I will say I personally have had no luck taping the toes but I know that most do

Find some bone radiol and mix it with olive oil, paint the toe 3 days on and 3 days off, do this process 2 or 3 times,I've see them end up like normal with no swollen knuckle.

Ratio off equal parts.

Rex,
I had my bitch to the vet again this morning, (14 days since injury occured) and her dislocated toe whilst swollen is sitting correctly and healing well.
It didn't need any further injections or restrictive bandaging.
I'll need to keep her on the lead for another couple of weeks, in which time the swelling should receed.

My main worry when he comes back is how to stop him from not going up the shute and running into catching pen gate again he might not be so lucky next time he is to keen for his own good

He should have learnt his lesson.
Take a fluffy toy with you next time and toss it into the middle of the pen.
He should go for it rather than taking on the rear gate.

Rex is usually take approx. 6 weeks to heal maybe more, but I would suggest that for the first 4 or 5 gallops that you tape the toes together with thin strips of tape or band this will keep the pressure off and also make sure you keep the nails cut back. If you can swim him all the better, but don't gallop on hard ground.

I strongly recommend you take the dog to Jose Dachary at kincumber vets on the central coast. I had a dislocation happen at maitland. He stiched it with cat gut as he finds it better than needling, no scarring. You'd never know from feeling the toe that it had ever been bent at right angles over next toe. Best 70 or so bucks iv ever spent.

Buggar.

Get a second opinion before your start having toe joints removed.

Never visted Peter Yore but he gets plenty of wraps from greyhound participants in the Hunter.
